Biography
Mark Schultz has been working for the past 14 years expanding the possibilities of paper collage. He was originally inspired by the materials and techniques of printmaking and the energy of the pop artists with whom he collaborated as a fine art printer.

Schultz is attracted to the immediacy of waste paper as a raw material, like an outsider artist, he crafts detailed and accomplished art objects from discarded, cultural ephemera. Reworking iconic and classic artistic themes, with thoroughly modern materials, the pieces are made possible only because of the proliferation of inexpensive and high quality commercial printing that is ubiquitous to our contemporary way of life. As a result the materials themselves are imbued with incidental editorial content.

Mark's current series is made entirely from hardware store paint swatches. Using these as his sole material, He has constructed a group of small, precious feeling works inspired by the purity of Zen painting.

A Graduate of CalArts, and a printer at Gemini G.E.L. for several years, where he collaborated with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney and Richard Diebenkorn, Mark is now based in his home state of Washington. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout California and Washington, and is regularly commissioned to create collaged portraits for private collectors.
