Mark Shultz
Far from simple collages, Mark Schultz's work tells beautifully intricate and complete stories using nothing but found scraps of printed paper. Bits of shopping bags, religious tracts, packing materials, and personal mail are transformed into fully realized works that are much more than the paper they are printed on. There is no blueprint or planned sketch for any of the pieces. Each grows organically as the new shreds of colored paper are added. Influenced by topics as diverse as pulp art from the 1940's and1950's to the nation's response to September 11th, he uses his sly wit and suspicious mind to delve deeper by using the ephemera of consumerism. Ranging in size from 8 x 11 inches up to 5 feet square, each piece and its assembly is a story unto itself.

A Graduate of CalArts, and a printer at Gemini G.E.L. for 5 years, where he collaborated with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney and Richard Diebenkorn, Mark is now based in his home state of Washington. He has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout California and Washington, and is regularly commisioned to create collaged portraits for private collectors.

Mark Schultz: Fortified With Zebra, is the inaugural show at the milo gallery. The most recent addition to the Mid-Wilshire gallery row, and located next door to 6150, milo gallery will focus on contemporary fine art by young and emerging talent.

Mixed-media artist Mark Schultz turns everything you thought you knew about collage on its head in this exhibition of remarkable OCD-noir images. Taking on everything from landscape vistas to blonde bombshells made entirely out of tiny pieces of paper, he wields his glue gun like a paint brush. Schultz's compositions offer more than just intriguing narratives; they have all the sensuality, visual dexterity, and physical presence of oil paintings. Of course, as the convoluted, obsessive process of their creation becomes clear, Schultz seems less like a lyrical poet and more like a mad scientist. (SND)
